General: The French
Republic or France (French: République
française or France) is a country whose
metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe,
but which also includes territories located in
other continents. France extends from the Mediterranean
Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea,
and from the Rhine River to the Atlantic Ocean.
Because of its shape, Metropolitan France is known
by Frenchmen as "the Hexagon". It is
bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland,
Italy, Monaco, Andorra, and Spain. It is across
the English Channel from the United Kingdom. Because
of French Guiana, the French Republic also shares
land borders overseas with Brazil, Suriname, and
the Netherlands Antilles.
Currency: EURO - The
euro is divided into 100 cent. All coins can be
used in all member states. There are €2,
€1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c and 1c coins. All
euro banknotes have a common design for each denomination
on both sides. Notes are issued in the following
values: €500, €200, €100, €50,
€20, €10, €5.
Language: French culture
is profoundly allied with the French language.
The artful use of the mother tongue, and its defense
against perceived decline or corruption by foreign
terms, is a major preoccupation for some persons
and entities.
