General: Peru (Spanish:
Perú, Quechua: Piruw, Aymara: Piruw) officially
the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República
del Perú [re'pu.ßli.ka del pe'?u]
(help·info)), is a country in western South
America, bordering Ecuador and Colombia to the
north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the south-east,
Chile to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the
west.
Peru was the cradle of
the Inca empire, and later the seat of the Viceroyalty
of Peru which had jurisdiction over all of Spanish
South America. It is the home of many indigenous
ethnic groups.
Currency: The nuevo
sol (plural: nuevos soles) (S/.) is the monetary
unit (currency) of Peru. It is subdivided into
100 céntimos.
The nuevo sol was introduced
on 1 July 1991 to replace the highly inflated
inti at a rate of 1 nuevo sol = 1,000,000 intis.
Coins denominated in the new unit were introduced
on 1 October 1991 and the first banknotes on 13
November 1991.
The ISO 4217 currency code
is PEN.
The name is a return
to that of Peru's historic currency, the sol in
use from the 19th century to 1985. Although the
derivation of sol is from the Latin solidus, the
name means sun in Spanish. There is a continuity
therefore with the old inti, which was named after
Inti, the Sun God of the Incas.
Language: Spanish, Quechua
and Aymara.
